Project Focus:

Makes money available to improve safety and design of street and sidewalk environment along routes to school.

Summary:

Legislation directs $25 million annually in federal transportation safety funding from the Hazard Elimination/Safety program toward a program to fund local engineering improvements to school route safety. Traditional pedestrian safety countermeasures are eligible for funding, as are traffic calming programs around schools to slow speeds of cars and make the streets safer for children walking to school.
