STPP News

STPP congratulates Sonya Jubar and Charles Carter on their December nuptials.  Sonya, STPP’s office assistant extraordinaire, met her betrothed on the red line of Washington, DC’s subway system!  We wish the newlyweds all the best.

We’d also like to congratulate Trinh Nguyen of STPP’s Sacramento Office for being chosen for the 2001 class of Environmental Leadership Fellows. To learn more about the program, visit http://www.elpnet.org .

Lastly, we say goodbye to William Peters, STPP’s network administrator.  William joined the staff four years ago where he designed and built the wide area network that connects the DC and California offices.  We thank him for his years of service and friendship.

William Peters,
Bound for UUNET

STPP Announcements

Help Support STPP!

As readers may know, the electronic bulletin Transfer, the newsletter Progress, and most of STPP’s publications and other services are offered free of charge.  Although we are not a membership organization, we do rely on individual donations to help us provide these services.  Readers who  wish to make a tax-deductible donation to STPP can now do so on-line through a secure server on our home page ( www.transact.org ).  This service is being provided in cooperation with the Environmental News Network (www.enn.com ).

Job Opening

STPP is seeking a Campaign Coordinator to advocate for statewide policy reform in our New Mexico office.  Applicant should be a self-starter with experience in advocacy, organizing, and dealing with the media. Knowledge of transportation issues, state and local politics, and Spanish a plus. For the job description, qualifications, and application procedures, see http://www.transact.org.

A Holiday Gift from STPP

STPP recently revamped its “Advocate’s Toolbox” to include power-point slides of the main statistics from all of our recent Quality of Life Campaign reports.  The Toolbox has been reorganized by topic so that materials on model legislation, media advocacy and using data can be more easily found. To access these tools, go to http://www.transact.org/Toolmonth/toolbox.htm .

We encourage advocacy partners to use these materials  in all of your upcoming presentations!

Scientific American Covers Smart Growth

The December 2000 issue of Scientific American magazine features an article by STPP’s Don Chen entitled, “The Science of Smart Growth.”  The eight-page article covers the driving forces behind the smart growth movement and some of the local strategies used to improve growth and development practices.  See http://www.sciam.com  for more information.
