Although the nation as a
whole has made tremendous progress with transportation over the last
decade, New Mexico has done little more than bond into debt to
expand highways while ignoring its future financial needs to
maintain and repair current roads, slighting investments in transit,
rail, bikeways and other transportation choices. Now
is the time for New Mexico’s transportation program to be broadened
from a roads-only approach to a more balanced, reliable and
accessible regional transportation system. STPP agrees with this
vision and recognizes that the development of an inter-modal
transportation system will have substantial economic, social and
environmental benefits.
The
Surface Transportation Policy Project is a diverse, nationwide
coalition working to ensure safer communities and smarter
transportation choices that enhance the economy, improve public
health, promote social equity, and protect the environment.
STPP has offices in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Sacramento, the
San Francisco Bay Area, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC.
STPP's New Mexico field office
provides assistance to citizen groups, local transportation agencies
and elected officials in order to help stakeholders take advantage
of the new opportunities available under the federal transportation
bill to link transportation to land use, housing, social equity,
livable communities and smart growth. STPP's New Mexico office is
helping to build a statewide transportation advocates coalition,
bring media attention to emerging transportation issues, and conduct
research and analysis. Please go to http://www.transact.org/ for
more information on STPP's national
work. STPP's
New Mexico work is made possible by funding from the Surdna
Foundation.
